2018 summary

number of books read: 51

I didn’t have a reading goal in mind when I started a reading list in 2018. And when I realized I had read 51 books in the last days of December, I could’ve rushed through one final book to make the yearly total equal 52. But “Read one book a week.” was never my goal.

I wanted to read more. Mission accomplished.

number of audiobooks: 14

I started 2018 thinking audiobooks “didn’t count as reading.” It felt like I was somehow cheating. But after reading this article by pyschologist, Daniel Willingham, I’m over that.

“Comparing audio books to cheating is like meeting a friend at Disneyland and saying, “You took a bus here? I drove myself, you big cheater.” The point is getting to and enjoying the destination. The point is not how you traveled.”

number of authors: 47

Before looking back at this year’s list of books, I didn’t remember any repeat authors. Turns out there were a few – Fredrick Backman, Marie Kondo, Jen Sincero, and Mindy Kaling.

number of dnfs: 4

I track the books I want to read in Trello and all the books that I have read in Goodreads. My Trello TBR lists (yes, there is more than one list) grow and shrink daily, and knowing that I have plenty of books waiting to be read makes me realize that if I’m not into a book, then I’m better off letting it go.

This year, I created a “Gave Up On” shelf in Goodreads. Tracking the books I’ve given up on puts the abandoned titles in a place where they won’t be lost forever. It might’ve been the wrong time/place for a particular book the first time around.
